First in the World: Robotic Shoulder Replacement Across Multiple Platforms

Posted on July 22nd, 2026 by Our Team

Dr. Erick Marigi
and his surgical team at
Mayo Clinic in Florida achieved a global milestone by becoming the first in the world to successfully perform a robotic shoulder replacement surgery across multiple platforms.

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body, and achieving ideal outcomes depends on precise execution at the time of surgery. Robotic technology allows surgeons to create a highly detailed surgical plan before entering the operating room, and then execute that plan with sub-millimeter accuracy. This advanced approach accounts for each patient’s unique anatomy, resulting in a truly personalized shoulder replacement designed to optimize function, stability, and longevity.

Mayo Clinic has a long-standing commitment to innovation, including performing the world’s first robotic total shoulder replacement in April 2024. Over the following year, Dr. Marigi evaluated and researched various robotic assisted shoulder technologies. In early 2026, he became the first orthopedic surgeon in North and Central Florida to perform robotic shoulder replacements using the Stryker MAKO shoulder system. Subsequently in July 2026, he expanded this work by performing a robotic shoulder replacement with the Zimmer Biomet ROSA shoulder system, a platform that includes both glenoid and humeral instrumentation.

This achievement made Dr. Marigi the first surgeon in the world to successfully perform robotic shoulder replacement surgery across multiple platforms. Today, he routinely offers this internationally recognized advanced technology to patients in Jacksonville, Florida, throughout the Southeast, and across the Country.
